Freelance Skills Training

Freelance skills training is a broad term that can encompass quite a lot. In general, freelance skills trainers usually work in soft skills training, targeted skills training and/or public speaking skills training. Many freelance skills trainers also take training courses themselves in order to round out their background and have a chance to find out what works and does not work in an organised training programme.

Soft Skills Training

“Soft skills” are a category of skills and/or personality traits that are not often explicitly taught. These skills usually include team work, decision making, problem solving, organisation, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, personal and professional responsibility, maturity and independence/independent thinking. These are sometimes referred to as “life skills” and are the types of skills that may never be addressed in a classroom or a professional training course. For this reason there is often a huge market of students, job seekers and professionals looking for advancement that respond well to freelance skills trainers.

Targeted Skills Training

More targeted skills training is also an option for individuals with particular talents or training. For example, make up artists are in a good position to take on clients in need of style skills. Solicitors are in a good position to take on clients in need of legal skills training. Accountants are in a good position to take on clients in need of bookkeeping skills training. The more education and experience an individual has, the more freelance skills training (s)he can usually branch out into and take on.

Public Speaking Skills Training

One skill that is almost always in demand is public speaking. Everywhere, every day, there is someone who is uncomfortable speaking in public or doing presentations. While public speaking could be categorised as a soft skill, freelance skills trainers should market this skill separately to ensure that it doesn’t get lost in the crowd. Individuals who need help with public speaking will want to be able to find a trainer without having to wade through many other services that might be available.

Training The Trainers

Most freelance skills trainers will do well to advance through training seminars and workshops themselves. Not only does this give them a firm background in their chosen area, and evidence that they have appropriate training to offer their own services, but it is also a chance for a trainer to see how others organise their presentations and approach.

When a trainer becomes a student, (s)he has the unique chance to take note of what they liked and didn’t like, what they felt worked and didn’t work, what they thought was important and unimportant, etc. When it comes time to organise their own appointments and seminars, freelance skills trainers can recall and relate to the training sessions they attended and can build a better programme for their own clients.

Freelance skills training can be a great job for individuals who can help others with soft skills, targeted skills and/or public speaking skills. Most freelance skills trainers will benefit from attending training of their own, and using the experience to better their own skills programmes.
